Warning About Telephone Solicitations
Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes NEVER Solicits Over the Phone
Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes and the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association never raise funds through telephone solicitations. Period. If you are called by someone claiming to represent Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes seeking a donation, please inform us or your local sheriff immediately.
In general, it’s a good idea to follow these precautions when considering gifts over the phone:
- Ask the solicitor what percentage of funds raised actually goes to the charity and what goes to fundraising.
- Insist on receiving materials by U.S. mail. Never allow a courier to pick up your contribution, and don’t be swayed by “professional-looking” materials alone.
- Reputable organizations can provide copies of their annual report and their official IRS letter designating the organization a tax exempt 501(c)(3).
You can verify official charities and non-profits in the state of Georgia by contacting the Secretary of State at 404-656-3920, by email, or by visiting the official website.
To file a complaint, contact the Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs at 1-800-869-1123.
