What is planned giving?

Planned giving is the making of a gift to Georgia Sheriffs' Youth Homes resulting from a planning process that not only provides a donation to us, but also considers the effects of the gift upon your estate.

  • Four kinds of gifts:
    • Outright gift
    • Investment gift
    • Annuity or Trust
    • Retained Life Estate
    • Bequest.

  • Three purposes for gifts:
    • Day-to-day operations
    • Capital improvements
    • Endowment.

  • What type of investment gift can I make?

  • 1. Charitable Gift Annuity.  A Charitable Gift Annuity is a simple contract between you and Georgia Sheriff's Youth Homes. In exchange for your irrevocable gift of cash, securities, or other assets, we agree to pay you a fixed sum of money each year for life.

The older you are at the time of the gift, the greater the fixed income we agree to pay. In most cases, part of each payment is tax-free. You will also be able to claim a charitable tax deduction for your gift.

    2. Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust. The main difference between a Charitable Gift Annuity and a Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust is the amount Georgia Sheriffs' Youth Homes can give to you and the period of time. The Annuity Trust gives you at least 5% fixed return of the fair market value of the trust when it is established. The rate could be higher, but once established, the percentage rate never changes. The payments cannot exceed twenty years.

     3. Charitable Remainder Unitrust. The difference between a Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust and the Charitable Remainder Unitrust is:  If you want to make a gift to us and want a larger return if the trust grows and are willing to accept less if it diminishes in certain years, you would be better off with a Charitable Remainder Unitrust.

What does the term Retained Life Estate mean?

A Retained Life Estate is where you irrevocably deed to Georgia Sheriffs' Youth Homes your home, farm, or vacation house, but retain the right to live in it for the rest of your life or a term of years.  You receive an immediate income tax deduction for the gift. If you decide to vacate the property, you may rent all or part of the property to someone else or sell the property in cooperation with Georgia Sheriffs' Youth Homes.

Bequest. A Bequest is when you decide to leave assets to Georgia Sheriffs' Youth Homes in your will.  Your estate will receive a charitable estate tax deduction at your death, when the gift is made to us.
